The soils of Darjeeling hill areas are extremely varied, depending on elevation, degree of slope. Kalimpong area is predominantly reddish in color. Soils in the highlands stretching from the west to the east of the district along most of the areas are mainly mixed sandy loam and loamy, while those on the southern slopes of Mirik and Kurseong are mainly clayey loam and reddish in color. Sandy soils are mainly found in the east of the river Tista.
