Yes! I said it right. Back in 1984 after the the launch of Kolkata metro BBC made a survey to find out the the metro railway system in the world. And Kolkata metro was ranked number one in that survey. That time infrastructure was not that good at Kolkata but it was dew to its passengers that Kolkata metro made that score.
As a special report released in Anandabazar, (a Bengali daily) metro stations at that time was so clean and disciplined that it was hard to believe that it is in India.
The report says “Underground Kolkata (Calcutta that time) and on ground Kolkata was two different worlds. People were so disciplined that they used to lined up at the gates, there were busy to keep the stations and trains clean. Even metro authorities were also very honest and dedicated in their jobs. There was no complaints from any one. Trains were so punctual that one can even set their clock on it.” Wasn’t that amazing?
But today?? Kolkata metro ranks possibly first from last. After more than 20 years of negligence now the Railway authority has finally started taking care of it. Lets hope that it repeats its history again.
A short history of Kolkata metro rail.
