Sumendu lake or Mirik lake is one of the best tourist attraction in Darjeeling. Located at 26.9°N 88.17°E Mirik has an average elevation of 1495 metres (4904 feet) from the sea level. Maximum and minimum temperature here moves between 6°C to 25°C. Best time to visit Mirik is between September and November.
This lake is surrounded by Pine trees on one side and man made hose court on the other side.
In the past there was a orchid house near the entrance of this lake but it is now completely destroyed dew to no maintenance.
Original name of the lake is Sumendu lake and this is the main tourist attraction. Most people today know this lake as Mirik Lake. Some people says that the lake was named after a fish named Mrigal found here. But today there is no such evidence for this.
There is a arching footbridge named Indreni Pull (Rainbow Bridge) over the lake. Length of this bridge is aprox 80 meters.
Horse riding and boating are available here.
