Sex Ratio in India – 2011 census

As of census 2011 absolute 62,37,24,248 males and 58,64,69,174 females live in India. Overall sex ratio in India is 940 females per 1000 males. This grown about 0.75% in last 10 years. In 2001 sex ratio in India was 933.

Only one state and one union territories have higher female sex ratio in India. Kerala has 1084 females per 1000 males and Puducherry(U/T) has 1038 females per 1000 males. In UTs like Daman in Daman & Diu(U/T) has the lowest sex ratio of only 618 females per 1000 male. Dadra & Nagar Haveli is another union territory also has a very low sex ratio of 775 female per 1000 male.

Growth of female Sex Ratio in India

6 out of 35 states and union territories in India had negative growth in sex ratio since last census.

  2. Dadra & Nagar Haveli (UT): -4.56%
  3. Jammu & Kashmir: -1.01%
  4. Bihar: -0.33%

Child (0-6 years) sex ratio in India

Child sex ratio in India is Sex ratio of children under 6 years of age is even lower than all over female sex ratio. Child sex ratio in India is just 914 girls per 1000 boys which decreased 1.40% during last decade. In 2001 child sex ratio was 927.
Mizoram has the highest child sex ratio of 971 girls per 1000 boys followed by Meghalaya with 970 & Andaman & Nicobar Islands (UT) with 966 girls per 1000 boys.
Haryana has the lowest 830 girls per 1000 boys. Punjab stands second with only 846 and Jammu & Kashmir stand 3rd with 859 female child sex ratio.

Growth of Child Sex ratio in India

No state/UT has female child sex ratio over 1000 in India. Only 8 out of 35 stats in India have positive child sex ratio during last 10 years. Punjab has the highest change of 6.02% followed by Chandigarh(UT) with 2.60% in child under 6 years of age sex ratio. Highest decrease in child sex ratio occurred in Jammu & Kashmir. J&K has negative growth of 8.71% in last 10 years. Next is Dadra & Nagar Haveli (UT) where child sex ratio decreased 5.32% at the same time.

Rural and Urban Sex ratio in India

It is quite surprising that female sex ratio in rural India is higher than urban India. Overall sex ratio in rural India is 947 where female sex ratio in urban India is just 926.

Top 3 states/UTs with highest rural sex ratio in India are

Kerala with 1077, Puducherry(UT) 1029 and Chhattisgarh with 1002 females per 1000 males.

Bottom 3 states/UTs with lowest rural sex ratio in India are

Chandigarh(UT) with only 691, NCT of Delhi (UT) with 847 and Dadra Nagar Haveli(UT) with 863 females per 1000 males.

Top 3 states/UTs with highest urban sex ratio in India are

Kerala with 1091, Puducherry(UT) 1043 and Manipur with 1038 females per 1000 males.

Bottom 3 states/UTs with lowest urban sex ratio in India are

Daman & Diu(UT) with only 550, Dadra Nagar Haveli(UT) with 684 and Chandigarh with 821 females per 1000 males.
