India has the world's third largest internet user base. As of December 2011 India has about 12.1 crore (121 million) internet users. Only China and USA have higher internet users. As per the data released by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India or TRAI, there were 2.239 crore (22.39 million) internet connections in India by the end of 2011. 13.35 million of these 22.39 million connections are Broadband (Speed above 256 Kbps) internet connections. That is 2.39 million higher than December 2010. Broadband internet subscribers in India have registered a growth rate of 21.49% in last year. Though the growth rate of internet users in India is great but still internet penetration in India is very poor. Only 10.2% of the country's population have the access to the internet.
According to TRAI there were 156 Internet Service Providers (ISP) in India in July 2012. Almost all mobile telephone operators are offering high speed mobile internet services and some of them are offering wired line internet services too. BSNL is the biggest ISP in India with 9.36 million subscribers and 63.7% market share alone. Bharti Airtel has 1.37 million subscribers and 9.3% market share. MTNL has 1.08 million subscribers and 7.3% market share. Top 10 ISPs in India have almost 94% market share. Other than these 3 top ISPs You Broadband, Hathway, Tikona and Sify are some big names that offer only internet services.
As per census 2011 in India, 3.1% houses in the country have internet connections. The census covered 24.7 crore (247 million) houses and found only 76 lakhs (7.6 million) households that have internet connection. For more details about this see State wise Internet Users in India Census 2011.
