Another masterpiece from Samsung and this time it is better then everything else in the market. Samsung Galaxy SIII (S3) or Samsung i9300 is loaded with so many features that others can’t even stand with it. Powered by Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A9 CPU and Mali-400MP GPU Samsung Galaxy SIII easily outperforms almost all others in the market. But wait, that is not all, there are many other things to keep in mind when choosing the best and Apple iPhone 4S still has something to compete with Galaxy S3.
Look and Feel
iPhone has created a bench mark here and Samsung is trying hard to catch up with it. Samsung S III is furnished with plastic covers and that comes in two shades. Though it looks good but doesn’t give you the premium feel.
Here are a few words from Andrew Williams who tells more about the look and feel of these two masterpieces.
Samsung’s Galaxy S3 comes in two shiny plastic finishes – white and a dark blue brushed metal-effect, but it’s still definitely plastic. LIke the Samsung Galaxy S2 before it, the battery cover is a very thin piece of plastic. It looks nice, but doesn’t feel a million dollars converted into phone form.
On the other side of the fence, the iPhone 4S is covered on each side by layers of toughened glass. It helps to keep the phone feeling ultra-premium, but doesn’t half make you worried about dropping the thing.
Dimensions and Weight
Galaxy SIII is bigger but lighter than iPhone 4S. Dimension of S3 is, height – 131mm, width – 63.7mm and thickness 8.9mm, where iPhone 4S is quite smaller in size with height of 115.2 mm, width of 58.6 mm and thickness of 9.3 mm. Because of Samsung Galaxy S3’s plastic body it weights 7 grams less than the weight of iPhone 4S. iPhone 4S weight about 140 grams.
Samsung Galaxy S3 (SIII) black front
When we buy a phone this is the most important part to look at, as this is what we use the most. Wow! what a statement I just made :). Jokes apart, Samsung Galaxy S3 definitely is the better option here with a huge 4.8 inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display that is of capable of 720 x 1080 pixels. Though the display size is bigger in S3 it has lower pixel density (~306 ppi) than iPhone 4S (~330 ppi). iPhone 4S comes with a 3.5 LED-backlit IPS TFT capacitive touchscreen display that displays 640 x 960 pixels.
Both of these phone’s displays are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass technology but different versions. S3 comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 2 – TouchWiz UI v4.0 where iPhone 4S has Corning Gorilla Glass, oleophobic coating protection.
CPU, GPU, RAM and Memory
As I mentioned above Samsung Galaxy S3 has a CPU that only HTC One X can compete with. With Samsung Exynos 4 Quad SoC CPU running at up to 1.4 GHz and Mali-400MP GPU it easily surpass Apple iPhone 4S’s Dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 CPU and PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU.
Galaxy S3 comes with 1 GB inbuilt RAM that enhances its performance even more. iPhone 4S has 512 MB RAM. For storage S3 is a bit superior than iPhone. Both comes with 16/32/64 GB inbuilt storage but S3 supports external micro SD cards to increase the memory even further.
Both of these phones come with latest version of OS. Apple iPhone runs on iOS 5 and it is upgradeable to iOS 5.1, where Samsung Galaxy S3 runs on Android v4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich. Both iOS 5 and Android 4.0.4 are latest in the market.
iPhone 4S and Galaxy S III have 8 mega pixels primary rear facing camera that can take stills with resolution up-to 3264 X 2448 pixels. Both have auto-focus, LED flash, touch focus, Geo-tagging and face detection. Samsung Galaxy S3 have some extra features for still photos like Smile detection & image stabilization.
Samsung has introduced some cool features to its camera and that makes it a class apart. First is you can take instantaneous shots at 3.3 shots per second with it. Plus, it has a burst mode which takes eight continuous shots and automatically picks the best one.
With S3 you can take still shots even when you are recording a video without interrupting or stopping the video.
Recording videos will give you the same result on both of these devices. They can record full HD footage of 1080p @ 30 frames per second.
Samsung SIII has a 1.9 MP front facing camera that can record videos at 720p with 30 frames per second. iPhone 4S has a VGA front facing camera which can be used to make video calls over Wi-Fi only.
Data and Connectivity
Samsung Galaxy S3 provides the maximum (more than enough for a mobile device) connectivity with other devices. It has GPRS Class 12, EDGE Class 12, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot and HSDPA at 21 Mbps and HSUPA at 5.76 Mbps. Apple iPhone 4S has GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot and HSDPA at 14.4 Mbps and HSUPA at 5.8 Mbps.
For connectivity Galaxy S3 is way ahead of iPhone 4S. It has Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP and EDR, NFC, microUSB v2.0, USB On-the-go. Though Samsung has dropped the HDMI output you can still enjoy it via MHL adaptor. iPhone 4S lacks all the features except Bluetooth v4.0 and USB v2.0.
Battery and Backup
iPhone 4S has quite low standard Li-Po 1432 mAh battery that gives about up to 200 hrs (2G/3G) stand by time, up to 14 hrs on 2G and up to 8 hrs on 3G talktime. It can play music up to 40 hrs.
Samsung Galaxy S3 comes with Li-Ion 2100 mAh battery to run its super power hardware. It gives stand by time up to 590 hrs on 2G and up to 790 hrs on 3G. You can make phone calls with as long as 21 hrs 40 min on 2G network and 11 hrs 40 min on 3G networks before the battery runs out.
Samsung Galaxy S3 vs Apple iPhone 4S
After the super successor of Galaxy S2 the expectation is very high from Samsung and it looks like Galaxy S3 will fulfill it, but we have to wait for a few days to see what the end users feel about it.
As iPhone 4S is almost 8 months old now Samsung Galaxy S3 is easily outperforming it in many ways, whether it is CPU or Memory or Camera or even some functions like face and voice recognition.
There is a newer version of iPhone, iPhone 5 is coming very soon in the market and it won’t be surprising if Apple turns the table again and the battle between them continues.
